ABOUT PROJECT

Author Notes:
Hi builders and happy Friday!

Are you planning to spend some time this weekend DIYing? I always get nervous come fall and realize not all the projects I wanted to tackle got done in the summer. It's always more fun for me to work outside, and like many of you, garage space is pretty competitive around our household!
So I am so sorry to do this to you today. Not that your list needs to be any longer, right? I hope you love this plan and want to build it!
Remember a couple weeks back when my friend Whitney at Shanty2Chic and I teamed up to get you plans for this amazing wood sideboard?
And we promised you a hutch plan?
Well, today's the day!
You can build this hutch too!
Whitney saved 90% off the cost of the inspiration project from Restoration Hardware.  But if you have been building for a while, you know it starts out as a means to save money.  And then you realize, hey, not only can I save money, but I can build exactly what I want, for my space, and paint it any color I want.  And building is so fun and rewarding too!
Whitney built this hutch out of PureBond Formaldehyde free plywood made right here in America to limit off gassing in her home - that's another great thing about DIYing for yourself - you can build your furniture healthier for your home and green too, without going broke!  I love DIY because you have complete control over what goes into your home.
You can read all the details from Whitney here.  Make sure you stop over and visit Whitney - you'll be inspired by her photos and let's not forget, this Mama has five little one's to take care of in between busting out hutches and sideboards!  Way to go Whitney!
And of course we got the free plans right here!
PS - I am going on book tour next week, and would love to meet you.  At all Home Depot events, my book will be given away for free with $20 purchase while supplies last, so if you need some boards or paint, stop by and say hi, grab an autographed book, and join the fun!  You can get all the details on the book and events here.
PSS - We are also giving away a 5 Plan Bonus Pack for free download as a thank you for preordering the book!   But you have to hurry - this offer ends when the book releases Tuesday, October 9th, 2012- so if you are planning on ordering the book, do it now to get the bonus pack!  You can get the details on preordering and the bonus pack here.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!

STEP 1

Shanty Hutch
Let's start by making the ends pretty. These will be at eye height. If you want, you can build the frame first, then attach to plywood second.

STEP 2

Shanty Hutch
Now add the moulding in. You may have to use shorter nails depending on your moulding thickness. Glue will also hold the moulding in place, as it's just decorative.

STEP 3

Shanty Hutch
Now we are starting the hutch itself. Attach top and center. I recommend attaching with pocket holes, but it's totally up to you.

STEP 4

Shanty Hutch
These boards will keep the back square and give you something to attach the back to. I recommend pocket holes on the back side.

STEP 5

Shanty Hutch
Now build the face frame as shown in diagram and attach to front of hutch. Fit so the ends are flush, making the corners look like one solid board.

STEP 6

Shanty Hutch
And add the crown moulding to top. You'll want to miter the corners for a finished look.

STEP 7

Shanty Hutch
Shelves can be added fixed with pocket holes underneath or shelf pins.

STEP 8

Shanty Hutch
Because of the size of this project, you will need to add two back panels as shown here. Carefully glue and nail to back of project.
When you attach to your sideboard, be sure to securely screw to wall behind to prevent tipping forward, and also it is recommended that you attach to sideboard as well.

FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS

Preparation Instructions:
Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth. It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.
